Hundreds of social media users have been misled by a digitally altered screenshot of a German television broadcast that appears to use a “Kremlin-friendly” map of Ukraine. The screenshot shows journalist Hanna Zimmermann presenting the Oct. 10 Heute Journal programme on the channel of Germany’s public broadcaster, ZDF. “German public broadcaster ZDF is using kremlin-friendly maps showing Ukraine without the Russian-occupied regions of the country. But ZDF said on Twitter on Oct. 12 that the screenshot shared on social media is “a manipulated photo” and “fake” (here). The segment in which the screenshot was captured can be viewed from 12:31 and shows that no such map of Ukraine is used.

"There is a realistic possibility that Putin will use his address to formally announce the accession of the occupied regions of Ukraine to the Russian Federation," the ministry said. Russia also used a referendum after it seized Crimea from Ukraine and annexed it in 2014.
